and imparted many great
recipes and canning
techniques to her children
and grandchildren. She
dearly loved her
grandchildren and great

The oldest child of William Homer and Gladys Petty, Jack
was born on January 18, 1917 in Ida, LA. He lived in the
small town of Ida until he was ten years old, and then
the family moved to Shreveport. Jack graduated from Byrd
High School in 1936, and one year later went to work for
Exxon Oil Company, then called Humble Oil Company. In
1941 he joined the United States Army and was stationed
at Camp Hulin in Texas. During his stay at Camp Hulin,
Jack met and married Mildred Rode, a German girl from

chose Bunkie as the place he would build his permanent
home.
Although Jack was a hard worker, he always found time to
do the things he enjoyed most; hunting, fishing, and
gardening. He took great pride in being an avid squirrel
and deer hunter. The spring of the year was usually the
time when Jack found his way to all his favorite fishing
holes. It was also the time of year when he began
planning and planting his huge summer garden. In fact,
his gardens were so big, many families and friends
enjoyed Jack’s bountiful vegetable crops!

Mrs. Thelma CrouchMrs. Thelma
Crouch, 95, of Fort Worth, Texas, and formerly of Bunkie,
passed from this life on Sunday, March 26, 2006.
Mrs. Crouch moved to Bunkie in the early 1950's when her
husband, Howard "Red" Crouch was transferred there with
the T&P Railroad. Three sons; Jerry, Ralph, Al (Butch),
and a daughter Sarah all went to school in Bunkie until
their move back to Texas around 1960. A fourth son, Joe,
was attending college at Nachitoches when the family moved
to Bunkie.
Thelma quickly became an active member of social, civic,
and school organizations in Bunkie. During her years there
she worked for Mr. Billeaud's pharmacy and for years at
The Bunkie Record, a job she always was so proud of.
Thelma's support of the Bunkie Panthers, the Band
Boosters, and PTA was unwavering. She also produced
several plays for the younger students that were held at
Haas Gymnasium.
Residents of Bunkie of Jerry and Ralph's age may recall
Thelma sewing many of the formal gowns for the high school
girls to wear to their dances and homecoming games. She
also made some of the majorette costumes and other clothes
enjoyed by the "high school set".
During the polio epidemic Mrs. Crouch worked tirelessly in
fund raising and also enlisting other residents in making
blankets and pajamas for those in the polio wards. Her
daughter Sarah was stricken with polio in 1952. Sarah
still has the signatures of the championship Bunkie
Panthers sent to her during that time!
When Mr. Crouch was transferred back to Texas for his job,
our family was saddened at leaving this wonderful little
town of Bunkie, Louisiana. We took memories still alive in
our hearts today, and none more so than the lovely lady
that left us on Sunday. She loved Bunkie and until just a
few years ago she and Sarah would still talk about the
"tea parties", the "coke parties", and the stories of
Jerry, Ralph, Al, and Sarah and their "life in Bunkie".
Mrs. Crouch was preceded in death by her husband, Howard,
in 1987, and our brother, Jerry Crouch, in 1996.
To all of you who will take a moment to remember our
family and this fabulous woman, I say thank you.
Sarah Crouch
